The polychaete worm Nereis fucata forms an unusual relationship with the hermit crab, Pagurus bernhardus. The worm seeks out a hermit crab inhabiting an empty whelk shell by sensing when the hermit crab walks over the substrate. The worm will quickly come out of the substrate and penetrate the interior of the whelk shell. Sometimes the hermit crab will catch the worm before it can accomplish this. If the worm is successful in entering the whelk shell it will build itself a cocoon near the apex of the shell. When the hermit crab feeds the worm emerges from the shell to try and steal the hermit crab's food. The hermit crab often uses one of its right legs to push the worm back in the shell but eventually the worm will reach the hermit crab's mouth and steal the food.

In Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast I turned over a cobble (adjacent photograph) in a small pool left by the falling tide and found thirty-nine juvenile hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, occupying mostly Gibbula umbilicalis (flat top shell) shells. One of the hermit crabs occupied a larger painted top shell, Calliostoma zizyphinum, shell. These hermit crabs are Europe's largest and most common hermit crab species. As they grow they move to deeper water and will eventually occupy empty common whelk, Buccinum undatum, shells. Photographed on 4 February 2007

The cobble in the middle of the tide pool in Belle Greve Bay, Guernsey had a gathering of 39 small hermit crabs, Pagurus bernhardus, underneath it. Most of the hermit crabs occupied the shell of the flat top shell, Gibbula umbilicalis. One of the slightly larger hermit crabs occupied the shell of the painted top shell, Calliostoma zizyphinum.
