The burrowing prawn Axius stirhynchus from Guernsey's inter tidal area
The burrowig prawn Axius stirhynchus donated to me for photograpy by Damian Wood and Troy Waterman on 6 May 2011.
From my knowledge this species of burrowing prawn in not found in the United Kingdom. It develops a complex tunnelling network under the substrate. These tunnels are often broken into by shore gatherers harvesting polychaete worms for fishing bait.
Axius stirhynchus appears to have highly developed spatial awareness being able to locate hidden tunnel entrances and removing shells and stones to reveal them and descend into them.
