Thinking about the environment can save money in the home and the office. This gallery has images of low energy light bulbs, bicycles, paper bags, and fuel efficient cars. Using fewer resources, consuming less energy and producing less waste is a good idea. Our society is very inefficient. We throw away too much and we waste too many resources. These images show some of the small changes our society is making to be less wasteful.

sealord > In an effort to reduce the use of one-use disposable plastic carrier bags many supermarkets offer reusable bags. This image shows a display of reusable grocery bags at a supermarket in Bayeux, Normandy. Many jurisdictions around the world are banning the use of disposable plastic carrier bags, which are detrimental to the environment. Plastic carrier bags can blight our countryside. Some enter the sea where they pose a threat to wildlife. They have been responsible for the death of turtles and cetaceans that consume them by mistake. Degraded plastic enters our food chain as microscopic particles.

sealord > The Cooperative in Guernsey is making an effort to reduce the use of single use plastic carrier bags in their shops. This sign at the Grande Marche supermarket in St Martin, Guernsey tells customers of some of the alternatives available. Customers can still use plastic carrier bags free of charge but more and more customers are now bringing their own shopping bags to the supermarket. Customers who bring and use their own reusable shopping bags are given one pence per bag to be donated to the Bourg Hospice in Guernsey. The Guernsey Cooperative has seen plastic carrier bag use fall during the last year. Guernsey Climate Action Network (G-CAN) has encouraged Guernsey supermarkets to stop giving out free plastic carrier bags to customers.

sealord > REDUCING PLASTIC CARRIER BAG OR SACK USE:

This small pouch which contains a very strong folded polyester bag is ideal for people, and for in men in particular, who habitually forget to bring a shopping bag with them when they pop into a convenience store or a supermarket to purchase a few items. The pouch clips onto a belt loop. I have one clipped to one of my trouser belt loops so I carry one with me at all times. I forget I have it until I need to use it. It has stopped me using countless single use plastic carrier bags. These reusable bags are made by Reisenthel Accessoires, which is a German company. This product called a Mini Maxi Shopper can be purchased in retail shops in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany for about 4.95 euros. I saw them for sale in New York City in the summer of 2007 where they were $7.95 without sales tax.

sealord > Rockland County Solid Waste Management Authority must be congratulated for recycling so much food packaging. Householders in the city of Nyack have on their doorstep a blue bin for paper and cardboard recycling and a green bin to recycle food packaging. I am impressed that such a large variety of packaging can be recycled.
