pine hawkmoth, Hyloicus pinastri
This pine hawkmoth, Hyloicus pinastri, entered a moth trap set in my garden in St. Peter Port, Guernsey on the evening of 3 July 2009. It was photographed on the morning of 4 July 2009.
This is the third species of hawkmoth to enter the moth trap in my garden. The most common so far this year is the poplar hawkmoth followed by the privet hawkmoth.
I have seen only one specimen of pine hawkmoth so far this year (up to 6 July 2009).
When I saw this moth first I mistook it for a privet hawkmoth but it is much smaller and was easily identified from the photograph.
