This gallery features moths and butterflies (order lepidoptera) I have photographed, mostly in 2008, in Guernsey, Channel Islands, British Isles. If the caption ends in 'smg' the identification I have made is tentative until confirmed by a lepidopteran specialist.

Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Record Centre (http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/ ) and Richmond Austin (moth specialist) of La Societe Guernesiaise (http://www.societe.org.gg/ ) have assisted me greatly in identifying many of the species I have photographed.

Any errors in identification are mine alone. Please contact me by email ( fishinfo@guernsey.net ) if you believe the identification of a moth or butterfly in this image gallery is in error.

sealord > Guernsey moth expert Richmond Austin invited me to attend the emptying of the moth trap stationed at Dell Nursery in St. Peter Port, Guernsey on the morning of Sunday 7 September 2008. I photographed this early thorn, Selenia dentaria, on the inside wall of the moth trap. Although I am sure Richmond Austin identified this moth for me I couldn't remember what it was called and identified it from the Concise Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland by Martin Townsend and Paul Waring with illustrations by Richard Lewington.

This moth was identified after a presentation on garden insects by Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre. http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/
Dr. Charles David had also identified a dead Jersey tiger moth that I found on a road in St. Peter Port, Guernsey the previous week.
