Although I have occasionally photographed insects over many years my interest in them is very recent. Photographing and learning about them offers a break from my main pursuit of photographing and identifying marine life. Entomologist Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre tells me that most insects cannot be identified from photographs alone. The same applies to many marine species. However Guernsey's insect fauna is more limited so some insect species can be identified in Guernsey as they may be the sole member of their family or genus found on our island. I have no knowledge of insects so some images only contain an image caption. The identifications that have been made have been provided by Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre. http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/

I find that photography is a great benefit for remembering what I have seen and where I have seen it. I hope to grow this gallery of images of insects so that it may help Guernsey residents and visitors identify the species they come across.

This buff-tailed bumble bee, Bombus terrestris, was first seen feeding on nectar by the side of the field bordering Fort Road, south of St. Peter Port on the 30 July 2008. The bee flew down to the ground as I approached to photograph it. Its abdomen was pulsating while it stood on the ground. This bumble bee was identified by entomologist Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre. http://www.biologicalrecordscentre.gov.gg/

Dr. Charles David of the Guernsey Biological Records Centre identified these two mating insects as belonging to the family psychodidae. They are known as drain or moth flies. These insects were mating under a fern leaf a few feet away from a composter set in a sunny location in my garden in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. They were photographed on the afternoon of 28 February 2009.
