Marine life found in Belle Greve Bay on Guernsey's east coast. Guernsey is the second largest island in the Channel Islands located between England and France. The gallery begins with general views of the bay followed by major groups of animals including sponges, cnidarians, worms, crustaceans, molluscs, echinoderms, ascidians, fishes and ending with some algae.

sealord > This image shows a dahlia anemone, Urticina felina, in a crevice, which has been left dry by the receding tide. The image was taken in Belle Greve Bay with a 2.8 megapixel Olympus digital camera. I have more attractive images of dahlia anemones taken underwater in the 'La Valette' and 'cnidaria' galleries. As a developer called Long Port has published plans to landfill large portions of Belle Greve Bay I thought it was important to show images of some of the diverse wildlife that inhabits this productive bay on Guernsey's east coast. This image was taken on 20 April 2003.

sealord > I found this tube anemone, Cerianthus lloydii, in a bed of eel grass, Zostera marina, at extreme low water spring tide (ELWS) on the sandy shore on the southern side of Belle Greve Bay. This anemone was in about 5 cm of water. As the first wave of the rising tide swept over it the anemone quickly disappeared from view down its tube.

Photographed on the 17 February 2007.

sealord > This image shows a small part of the interior of a small cave near Conger Rock in Belle Greve Bay. The cave is home to several Devonshire cup corals, Caryophyllia smithii; sponges, ascidians and various molluscs including the painted topshell, Calliostoma zizyphinum, in the upper right of the image. The Devonshire cup coral has withdrawn its tentacles because of low tide. They feed at night and live in shaded, dark locations on vertical surfaces and in caves. Photographed on 10 February 2005 during a very low spring tide.
