sealord > A sea slater, Ligia oceanica, captured from the upper shore near   the Lihou Island causeway on Guernsey's west coast. This one inch long isopod lives in damp crevices at the top of the shore (in the sea spray and splash zone).  An internet site mentions that they make good pets.  They will eat a variety of vegetable foods. Photographed on 7 September 2000.

sealord > The common sea slater, Ligia oceanica, in a granite wall crevice at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. The 3 cm long sea slater lives on the upper shore around the high tide mark.  It is often seen scurrying over damp walls in this area.

sealord > This fascinating tiny male isopod, Gnathia maxillaris, spends his adult life in a crevice and drags passing females into his harem.  As an adult he doesn't feed but as a juvenile( praniza ) this species is a skin parasite on fishes. This individual was found on the sea-shore at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast.

The adult female doesn't feed but is a vescile to carry eggs. The production of juveniles ruptures the female and leads to her death.  This female was found without eggs on the sea-shore in a crevice with a male at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. The body of the still-living female was completely hollow.
