The small but beautiful gem anemone, Aulactinia verrucosa, lives in rock pools on the upper shore. This one was photographed in a green seaweed (Ulva sp.) filled rock pool at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. As the tide was out the anemone had withdraw its tentacles. The rows of warts or verrucae on the column help identify this species. The closed anemone resembles the shell or test of a sea urchin. Photographed on 8 February 2005.
