A compass jellyfish, Chrysaora hysoscella, photographed in St. Peter Port harbour, Guernsey on 8 August 1997. Compass jellyfish arrive in Guernsey waters in July and August. They are often collected by children using dip nets off Guernsey's north and west coast beaches. File No. 32-21 ©RLLord fishinfo@guernsey.net
The jellyfish, Pelagia noctiluca, found in a rock pool near the Lihou Island Causeway on the west coast of Guernsey. I have seen this species in small numbers in Guernsey waters only in April. Stalked jellyfish, Haliclystus octoradiatus, on Laminaria seaweed in a rock pool at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. This animal was first identified by Dr. Allen G. A dahlia anemone, Urticina felina, in a rock pool at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. Photographed 10 June 2006. I have seen this beautiful dahlia anemone in this rock pool for several years. Other dahlia anemones I see on the rocky shore at La Valette are often attached to boulders and cobbles and I see them only once. The dahlia anemone in this pool is difficult to see because the surface of the pool is covered in a thick layer of green seaweed called 'velvet horn', Codium sp. during the summer months. A dahlia anemone, Urticina felina, with a diameter of 5 to 6 cm growing on the side of the rectangular metal float of a pontoon attached to the fish quay in St. Peter Port harbour, Guernsey. This photograph was taken with a Canon S80 digital camera with an underwater housing. Fanworms grow down from the base of the pontoon float. The dahlia anemone is uncommon in Guernsey rock pools on the seashore but the pontoon attached to the fish quay has large numbers of them. Unfortunately, the pontoon is cleaned every four or five years so they will be removed but presumably they will recolonise the cleaned pontoon in time. A blue daisy anemone, Cereus pedunculatus, from the seashore at La Valette on Guernsey's east coast. This species was attached to the base of a rock. The column can elongate and contract remarkably. The column often has shell debris attached to it. This species is more common on the beach to the north of La Valette in Belle Greve Bay near bedrock. The anemone attaches to the bedrock and the column elongates so that the crown of tentacles protrude and lies flat on the surface of the sand. Photographed in March 2003. A pair of orange plumose anemones, Metridium senile, photographed in the Queen Elizabeth II marina, St. Peter Port harbour, on Guernsey's east coast. Plumose anemones are plankton eaters. The QE II marina entrance is in the north-east corner of the marina. The largest plumose anemones live in the south-east corner of the marina where they receive a plentiful supply of plankton when the rising tide floods the marina with fresh seawater from Belle Greve Bay.
