This fish caught by Brent Hanley near Hanois lighthouse off Guernsey's south-west coast on 15 October 2011 will be submitted as a British angling record. It weighed 1 lb. 14 oz. and 3 drams. The fish had suffered some damage to the second dorsal fin rays during its infancy. Although the ray membrane was intact, five rays were missing. The ratio of the height of the dorsal fin lobe to the length of the pectoral fin keyed out to a Guinean or a greater amberjack, but the gill raker count was too high for these fish. Based on the gill raker count alone, this fish was identified as an Almaco jack, Seriola rivoliana.

Jacks in the genus Seriola are becoming more frequent visitors to the western English Channel. The first Seriola jack captured in Bailiwick of Guernsey records, was landed by George Staples on 7 September 2000 off the east coast of Herm Island. This fish was identified, based on the gill raker count and the fin ratios as a Guinean amberjack, Seriola carpenteri, but some doubt has now been cast on the original identification, and the individual fish, which was destined for the Natural History Museum in London, can no longer be located.

Guernsey commercial fisherman Steve Fallaize caught this 585 gram Greater amberjack, Seriola dumerili, one mile off Rousse off Guernsey's north coast on the 9 December 2009. The fish had a total length of 376 mm, a fork length of 328 mm, and a standard length of 299 mm. The greater amberjack had 18 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. The lobe of the second dorsal fin was 54 mm high, and the pectoral fin was 51 mm long. It was captured at 49 degrees 31.36 minutes north and 2 degrees 33.37 minutes west.

This pomfret, Taractes rubescens, which some FAO publications call a knifetail pomfret, has a raised ridge of scales on the caudal peduncle. It also has a long pectoral fin (longer than 36% of standard length), which separates it from the similar rough pomfret, Taractes asper. The fishermen were landing mainly espada, Aphanopus carbo. They had also caught a few pomfret and a large escolar, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum. They were very friendly. They allowed me on their boat to photograph the fish they were off-loading early in the morning to the fish auction in the harbour, Funchal, Madeira. I enjoy visiting the Funchal fish auction in the harbour because of the deep sea fish that one sees.

I photographed this pomfret, Taractes asper, in the Municipal fish market, Mercado dos Lavradores, in central Funchal, Madeira. This species, which an FAO publication calls 'flathead pomfret' and the Collins Pocket Guide to Fish of Britain & Europe calls 'rough pomfret', has a shorter pectoral fin (less than 36% of standard length) than Taractes rubescens. The first few anal fin rays are also much longer than the same rays in Taractes rubescens. Taractes asper also doesn't posses the raised ridge of scales on the caudal peduncle.

A black ruff, or blackfish, Centrolophus niger, was given to me by a wholesaler at Mercabarna, which is Barcelona's wholesale fish market. This fish had no commercial value and was in a box of mixed species. Photographed in Barcelona, Spain in April 1990.
