Sag Harbour Recycline plastic plates 290807 406 smg
Most plastic is made from oil. After use plastic remains in the environment for decades or more. Bacteria don't see to be able to completely degrade plastic. Microscopic plastic particles contaminate the oceans and land and can enter the food chain. Softners called phthalates used in manufacturing plastic may mimic hormones and cause endocrine disruption. Recycling plastics into new products is a good way forward as long as the new products can be recycled as well. The idea of recycling yoghurt cups into plastic plates or razors or toothbrushes is a great idea if the process does no environmentally harm. Ultimately the aim would be to recycle plastic products indefinitely.

The Mont Cuet landfill in the north of Guernsey were most of the garbage generated in Guernsey ends up. As this hill of garbage rises above the surrounding landscape plastic carrier bags will inevitably be picked up by the wind and blown around the neighbourhood. Mont Cuet is next to the shore on the north coast of Guernsey. Plastic bags already end up strewn across nearby hills and entangled in nearby bushes. Even though the people who work there do their best to cover the rubbish with soil some of the lighter rubbish becomes airborne. Photographed on the 5th June 2007.

Fresh fruit from Germany packaged and sold in brown paper. This packaging makes a refreshing contrast to the excessive plastic packaging used by some British supermarkets.
