Thank you for visiting my image galleries at Sealordphotography.net on Smugmug.
I have about 50,000 35 mm slides and a growing number of digital camera images. I hope that in the coming months and years many of these images will be uploaded to my image collection on the web.
My images concentrate on the marine life of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which lies in the sea between France and England, and commercial fisheries. My commercial fisheries collection includes images of wholesale fish markets, aquaculture facilities, seafood processing plants and fishing boats. I have photographed also about 1500 fish and shellfish species that entered the USA seafood market between 1982 and 1994. In recent years my image collection has expanded to include Guernsey landscapes and seascapes, nature, agriculture and farmers' markets. I have a growing collection of images that cover climate change, environment and sustainability issues.
I hope my image collection serves two purposes. I wish to market my images to various users. I hope also to organise my image galleries to help people identify species. Currently I am placing my commercial fish and shellfish images in the ‘Food’ category. I am placing my ‘Guernsey marine life’ images in the ‘Nature’ category.
I hope my Guernsey marine life images will help people identify marine species they may find or catch in the region of Guernsey. Many species I have photographed in Guernsey waters have a widespread distribution and so my images may help identify animals and plants found elsewhere.
Using my images for two purposes does provide a challenge. Images useful for identification may not be attractive, and attractive images may not reveal the identity of the species photographed. Some species cannot be identified by photographs alone. Species identity can only be confirmed by collection and examination of the subject and this is not always possible or desirable.
Scientific names also change as new research elucidates species relationships. Therefore I would appreciate comments about species identification or scientific nomenclature by people who are familiar with the species I have photographed.
My fish and shellfish and marine life image collection would not be possible if it were not for the generosity of commercial and recreational fishermen in Guernsey, and seafood suppliers at various trade shows in the USA, and wholesalers at Fulton Fish Market in New York City.
Many marine biologists have helped me identify or confirm the identity of species I have photographed and I have mentioned them when possible.
